Fabio Pea, an MBA candidate at Albers and a first-generation college student, founded the La Luz Foundation(LLF). He was born in Mexico, and when he was 2, his family moved to Washington. Working in Landscaping during his early days motivated him to pursue a college degree. 

Also, Facing many challenges as a first-generation student at the University of Washington inspired him to establish a business consulting firm that funds first-generation students through their “First Hub” program. 

Eligibility Criteria 

Because the La Luz scholarship believes that grades are not the only thing that indicates students’ potential and success, they have made the requirements for this scholarship simple. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must: 

  • Be a high school senior, current undergraduate, or graduate student in the United States. 
  • Plan to enroll full-time at an accredited community private/public college or graduate program for the 2023-2024 academic year. 
  • Be a first-generation student    (immigration status regardless)
  • In addition, applicants must write a 500-word or less essay replying to the prompt “How has being a first-generation student impacted your academic journey? And How will this scholarship support you financially? 


Who Funds the La Luz Scholarship? 

The three primary ways the scholarship is funded are:

  • Through crowdfunding: One way this scholarship gets its funding is by getting money from people (mainly on the internet) willing to give relatively some amount. This small amount that each person contributes becomes a considerable amount and is used to run the program. 
  • Another way the scholarship gets funds for its activities is through collaboration with large companies and small and nonprofit businesses. They donate part of their sales revenue to support the La Luz scholarship. 
  • Additionally, clothing sales featuring our First Hub or Pea & Co. logos (shirts, hoodies, etc.).

Deadline for La Luz Scholarship Application
